Actually technically speaking, he’s not really a murderer. He never killed anyone. He finds ways for his victims to kill themselves.
Sure, I probably take Saw too seriously but it fucks me off so much when people completely miss the point of these films. People slate it for being mindless gore/torture porn. No, Jigsaw is simply testing people who take the life they have for granted by putting them in harrowing situations to actually test their survival instinct. To me, that makes it not gratuitous. It has a purpose. You may not appreciate that purpose, but that doesn’t make it any less valid.
As above, Jigsaw is not a serial killer, if you use that in an argument with me to slate the films I will (want to at least) punch you in the face. I know in a legal sense he would be probably be culpable in some way but philosophically, no bueno.
If you keep calm and think clearly, there’s [always*] an easy way out of your predicament if you don’t panic. They always panic though. I get maybe it’s not fair to expect them not to panic, but hey, he gives them chances.
I even feel they have done a good job of maintaining some of this depth throughout the sequels. Probably not as much as they could have, but they tried & I respect them for that.

*Spoilers for VI, but there is a plot detail regarding an assistant not obeying this particular protocol so I can’t quite state it happens every time. It does on all the ones Jigsaw orchestrated himself however.
